Becoming Nature Positive

Becoming Nature Positive: Transitioning to a Safe and Just Future “, an open access book from the Nature Positive Initiative

Becoming Nature Positive: Transitioning to a Safe and Just Future
is a collaborative effort from a wide range of authors, covering many sectors of society.

‘Nature Positive’ is a recently agreed upon global goal to “halt and reverse nature loss by 2030 on a 2020 baseline and achieve full recovery by 2050.” It is a goal I hope everyone can get behind.

“But if we want to achieve this goal, and regenerate nature, then every stakeholder in society – including business, finance, government, society, and academia – also needs to know what they can do about it, and how they can integrate this goal into their own activities.

“That is what ‘Becoming Nature Positive’ is about. This book provides a panoramic view of what Nature Positive is, how it came about, and how a broad coalition of stakeholders is going about achieving it. I hope you find it an inspiring read and invite you to join us in our quest to make Nature Positive a reality.”

The world’s first book about Nature Positive is now available to read for free online under the Creative Commons Open Access license. Published by Routledge Earthscan in June 2025 and written by a diverse range of sustainability thought leaders, Becoming Nature Positive: Transitioning to a Safe and Just Future provides an in-depth description of how the Nature Positive global goal came to be, why it matters – and what it will take to achieve it across business, finance, governance and society.

Nature Positive is a global societal goal to halt and reverse nature loss, agreed by all countries in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework at the UN Convention on Biological Diversity’s fifteenth Conference of the Parties (COP15) in 2022. The goal means ensuring there is more nature in the world tomorrow than today, for the benefit of each of us and all life on Earth. But transitioning to a nature-positive society and economy requires deep changes in the way we think of ourselves in the world, live our lives and run our economy.

As humanity sits at an existential crossroads, Becoming Nature Positive: Transitioning to a Safe and Just Future articulates why a nature-positive future is the only way to secure the functioning and stability of Earth systems essential to the survival and wellbeing of present and future human generations – as well as the rest of Earth’s amazing diversity of life.
